The disturbing link between microplastics and premature aging

A United Kingdom–based recycling company has entered the conversation about microplastics with AI modeling, showing just how badly microplastic exposure will accelerate aging and impact how we look.[]
In a report, the company said it used its modeling to demonstrate how low, medium, and high levels of microplastic exposure could affect the appearances of healthy young people.
It's not looking good...
Premature aging was evident with high-level exposure. The report suggested that people who work in waste management, manufacturing, and synthetic textile industries are at increased risk of high-level microplastic exposure.
At medium exposure levels, AI-generated images showed oily, irritated skin and faster aging. This level of exposure came from frequently consuming processed food and wearing synthetic fabrics. At the low level, caused by everyday exposure, some skin irritation, dryness, and redness were present.
AI-generated models can’t perfectly predict how microplastics might affect aging, but the models still present an interesting look at the possible impact of these tiny particles on human health.

Microplastics are all around us. These tiny particles are found in food, cleaning products, fabrics, dust, and more. [] Studies on potential impacts of microplastics on the human body are still in the early stages.
Back in 2022, the World Health Organization reported that we don’t yet have the technology to measure the amount of microplastics in the human population or the technology to fully remove them.[] And things haven't changed much since. But we do have evidence for how other environmental toxins—which, like microplastics, are ever-accumulating—affect how we physically age.
“The many pollutants in one’s environment have been shown to have different, damaging effects on human skin, aging skin cells prematurely,” Dr. Antoun says. “In research on human subjects, free radicals and UV exposure have been found to damage collagen, cause wrinkles, and reduce skin elasticity.”
The challenge is to determine what effects could be caused by exposure to even tiny amounts of these chemicals in the body, as microplastics continue to accumulate throughout our body systems. [] Over time, they have the potential to damage cells and disrupt hormones, eventually affecting lifespan and contributing to chronic disease.
“Their prevalence in the body is thought to trigger a physiological response as if they are ‘foreign invaders,’ leading to an inflammatory state, which is directly associated with aging and most age-related conditions,” Dr. Antoun explains. “A chronic inflammatory state can lead to subsequent chronic conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, and more, and should be avoided at all costs.”
