Short-term outcomes in patients attending a primary care-based addiction shared care program
Canadian Family Physician, 11/16/09
Kahan M et al. – Shared care programs can help primary care physicians manage chronically ill patients through ongoing education, communication, and clinical support. This study measured changes in self–reported substance use in patients referred to an addiction shared care program run by family physicians who work in a primary care setting. The program had high attendance rates and substantial reductions in the use of alcohol, opioids, and other substances among patients. A shared care program has many advantages over traditional addiction treatment. Also, it could enhance primary care physicians’ involvement in addiction treatment, thereby greatly expanding patients’ access to treatment.
