Investigations for recognizing urinary stone
Urological Research - Urolithiasis, 10/27/09
Varma G et al. – The plain both X–ray KUB and USS should be performed in patients with suspected stone disease for identifying stone disease and also to exclude other pathology which may produce similar urinary symptoms.
Y. M. Fazil Marickar, 10/27/09
| When patients visit a doctor for suspected urinary stone problem, the usual practice is to take an ultra sound scan of the abdomen and recognise echogenic foci measuring 0.5 mm upwards. Based on this finding, unmodulated empirical chemotherapy is started. Repeated reassessments by sonography and comparison of size in decimels of milli meters are utilised for claims of sucessful chemotherapy. This unfortunately leads to unethical trends in claims of success with blind chemotherapy. The article attempts to focus on this problem. However the utility of ultra sound scan in recognising hydronephrosis, hydro ureter, cysts, pelviureteric junction stenosis, radiolucent stones and tumours is stressed. |
