A cross-sectional study of ultrasound estimated bladder weight in a sample of men and women without lower urinary tract symptoms
Neurourology and Urodynamics, 09/23/09
Morris V et al. – This study has described a highly significant association between UEBW and height, and span and BSA in a group of asymptomatic individuals of both sexes. Caution should be taken when ascribing pathological significance to observations made in the absence of understanding of normal physiology.
Adrian Wagg, 09/23/09
| We were rather pleased by this study. We were concerned about the rush to ascribe pathological significance to this measurement without an understanding of normal variation. We found a highly significant relationship between UEBW and height in men and women from 20-70 years of age - this certainly wasnt expected. Subsequently, Khullar has described a close association between UEBW and DO in women - there was no controlling for height, but we suspect that this relationship may stand. Whether this is secondary to increased matrix, or a true smooth muscle phenomenon remains to be seen |
