Morris V et al. – This study has described a highly significant association between UEBW and height, and span and BSA in a group of asymptomatic individuals of both sexes. Caution should be taken when ascribing pathological significance to observations made in the absence of understanding of normal physiology.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Adrian Wagg, 09/23/09

We were rather pleased by this study. We were concerned about the rush to ascribe pathological significance to this measurement without an understanding of normal variation. We found a highly significant relationship between UEBW and height in men and women from 20-70 years of age - this certainly wasnt expected. Subsequently, Khullar has described a close association between UEBW and DO in women - there was no controlling for height, but we suspect that this relationship may stand. Whether this is secondary to increased matrix, or a true smooth muscle phenomenon remains to be seen
