Impact of Charlson’s comorbidity index on overall survival following tumor nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma
International Urology and Nephrology, 08/31/09
Ather MH et al. – There was significant improvement in the quality of life, following tumor nephrectomy, even for Stage–IV cancers. Multivariate analysis indicated besides tumor stage, grade, and size of the tumor, Charlson’s index has a significant predictive value on overall survival.

| Surgery continues to be the main stay of treatment for most renal cancers. Recent introduction of targeted therapy is opening new horizon in the management of advanced and metastatic renal cancer, though overall survival is not significantly different. The overall survival besides the oncological factors is greatly dependant on the co morbid factors. Charlson's index is an objective way of assessing the biological factors affecting overall prognosis besides cancer. In the current work we noted that the overall survival in patients treated by radical or tumor nephrectomy for renal cancer is not only dependant on the tumor specific variables like grade, tumor type, and pathological stage but is also significantly influenced by patient specific variables like co morbidity, gender and age. Charlson's index provides a validated instrument to provide improved preoperative prognostic evaluation. |
