Clemens JQ – In urologic practice, it is common to assign a specific diagnosis based on the presence of a set of characteristic symptoms. No objective diagnostic tests clearly differentiate between these conditions, and all are diagnoses of exclusion that are assigned after ruling out other identifiable etiologies for the symptoms (eg, urinary tract infection, bladder cancer). This article reviews the characteristic symptoms that define each condition and highlights the significant degree of overlap that exists between them.
