Murtola TJ et al. – The detection of low–grade, early–stage tumours is decreased among men who use finasteride for symptomatic BPH. The protective effect of finasteride can also be expected in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Exclusive Author Commentary
TJ Murtola, 08/11/09

The PCPT has demonstrated that long-term finasteride use decreases prostate cancer risk in men with low PSA and no lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). However, a typical finasteride user has benign prostatic hyperplasia, elevated PSA and moderate to severe LUTS. Our study shows that the protective effect of finasteride usage applies also to this latter group of medication users. Also alpha-blockers may have some benefit in reducing prostate cancer risk, but this area needs further research.
