Association of coronary artery disease, erectile dysfunction, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase polymorphisms

Meluzin J et al. – Pts with numerous cardiovascular risk factors referred for coronary angiography had a high prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED), both with presence or absence of coronary atherosclerosis. The coincidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), and ED identified pts at increased risk of severe forms of CAD.

Methods

Study of the relationship between ED, CAD, and T-786C and intron 4 a/b endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) polymorphisms
Subjects: 419 pts with suspected or known CAD referred for coronary angiography
High prevalence of risk factors for both CAD and ED: hypercholesterolemia (64%), hypertension (74%), diabetes mellitus (25%), obesity (30%), and smoking (63%)

Results

Significant coronary atherosclerosis (luminal diameter narrowing of ≥50% of ≥1 coronary artery) for 321 pts
Insignificant coronary stenoses for 41 pts
Coronary arteries without evidence of atherosclerosis for 57 pts
ED prevalence in these 3 pt groups: 79%, 76%, and 67% (P = NS), respectively
Significantly higher probability of significant coronary atherosclerosis, higher number of significant coronary stenoses, and higher prevalence of triple-vessel disease for pts with vs without ED
No relationship between T-786C and intron 4 a/b polymorphisms and manifestation of coronary atherosclerosis or presence of ED
