Evaluation of self-collected glans and rectal swabs from men who have sex with men for the detection of chlamydia trachomatis and neisseria gonorrhoeae by nucleic acid amplification tests
Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 04/17/09
Moncada J et al. - AC2 and SDA were far superior to culture for CT and GC detection in the rectum with both detecting at least twice as many infections. While the authors found self-collected rectal swabs from MSM are valid specimens, sensitivity with glans specimens was disappointing except in symptomatic GC. Self-collected glans may not be appropriate for CT and in low risk/asymptomatic populations for GC detection by AC2 and SDA, and the authors would not recommend its use based on these results.
