Impact of the number of resected and involved lymph nodes on esophageal cancer survival
Journal of Surgical Oncology, 06/23/09
Chen YJ et al. - The pathological assessment of minimal 12 lymph nodes provides sufficient prognostic information. Three-tier nodal grouping is suggested for the next version of AJCC staging system for esophageal cancer.
Yi-Jen Chen, 06/23/09
| Studying 3,144 cases of esophageal cancer, it is noted that increasing number of positive lymph nodes correlates with poorer survival and pathological assessment of minimal 12 lymph nodes provides sufficient prognostic information. Since the prognosis is different between the 3 groups of positive nodes, 0, 1-3 and 4 or >4, we recommend altering the current staging system to reflect the difference. |
