AHRQ sees more health care spending for the middle-aged

Spending on health care for Americans aged 45–64 nearly doubled between 1996 and 2006, to $370 billion, according to a recent report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Average annual spending for those who received health care increased by $1,606 over the 10–year period, to $5,455. Spending for hospital inpatient care declined over the period, from 36% of total spending to 26%, while spending for prescription medicines rose, from 15% to 25%.
