Cutolo M – Serum testosterone levels are inversely correlated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity and dehydro–epiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) levels are inversely correlated with both disease duration and clinical severity. On the contrary, adrenal and gonadal androgens are significantly decreased in inflamed synovial tissues during active disease, which supports a pro–inflammatory milieu in RA joints.
