Assessing forearm fracture risk in postmenopausal women

Melton LJ et al. – Detailed bone structure and strength measurements provide insight into forearm fracture pathogenesis, but femoral neck aBMD performs adequeately for routine clinical risk assessment.

Methods

100 postmenopausal women with a distal forearm fracture and 105 controls
Femoral neck areal BMD was measured
Radius volmetric BMD, geometry, and microstructure were assessed
Ultradistal radius failure load was evaluated

Results

Fracture cases had inferior bone density, geometry, microstructure, and strength
The most significant determinants of fracture was bone density, geometry, microstructure, and strength
The predictors of forearm fracture risk were femoral neck aBMD and SMI
