Bone loss in relation to serum levels of osteoprotegerin and nuclear factor-?B ligand: the Tromsø Study
Osteoporosis International, 08/25/09
Jorgensen L et al.In postmenopausal women not using HRT, bone loss was positively associated with osteoprotegerin (OPG). In women deficient in sex steroids, the OPG/RANKL system may play an important counter-regulatory role in avoiding bone loss and maintaining BMD.
Methods- Longitudinal study of 4,137 adults (2,003 males and 2,134 females)
- Baseline measurements included height, weight, BMD of the forearm, OPG, RANKL, vitamin D, and serum PTH
- Measurements were repeated in 6 h
- BMD was negatively associated with OPG at baseline in men and women
- In postmenopausal women not on HRT, bone loss increased with increasing OPG
- There was no relationship between bone loss and OPG in men, premenopausal women, or postmenopausal women on HRT
- BMD at baseline and BMD changes were not related to RANKL in any of the groups
