Bone loss in relation to serum levels of osteoprotegerin and nuclear factor-?B ligand: the Tromsø Study

Jorgensen L et al.In postmenopausal women not using HRT, bone loss was positively associated with osteoprotegerin (OPG). In women deficient in sex steroids, the OPG/RANKL system may play an important counter-regulatory role in avoiding bone loss and maintaining BMD.

Methods

Longitudinal study of 4,137 adults (2,003 males and 2,134 females)
Baseline measurements included height, weight, BMD of the forearm, OPG, RANKL, vitamin D, and serum PTH
Measurements were repeated in 6 h

Results

BMD was negatively associated with OPG at baseline in men and women
In postmenopausal women not on HRT, bone loss increased with increasing OPG
There was no relationship between bone loss and OPG in men, premenopausal women, or postmenopausal women on HRT
BMD at baseline and BMD changes were not related to RANKL in any of the groups
