Rheumatology, 08/26/09
Ravindran V et al. – For the native joint septic arthritis (SA), surgical tx was not superior to medical tx.
Methods- Case review of 51 patients with SA txd between 1/2001 and 12/2006 medically (n=32) or surgically (n=19)
- Medical tx resulted in complete recovery in more patients (69% vs. 53%), but a longer period of hospitalization (16.5 vs. 15 d)
- More surgical patients had dterioration in functional status at the time of d/c (29% vs. 44%)
- Surgically txd patients required more sessions of physiotherapy (10 vs. 7)
Dr V Ravindran, 08/27/09
| Our study strengthens the view that in a large majority of uncomplicated native joint septic arthritis closed needle aspirations of affected joint and antibiotic therapy would be sufficient. It is important therefore that patients are selected carefully in whom surgical intervention would be necessary as the initial method of treating native joint septic arthritis. |
