Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in systemic sclerosis

Marie I et al. – Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) often occurs in SSc patients. The glucose hydrogen methane breath test should be performed in the subgroup of SSc patients exhibiting a global symptomatic score (GSS) ≥ 5.
Methods- 51 patients with SSc underwent glucose hydrogen and methane breath test
- A questionnaire for intestinal symptoms and a GSS was calculated
- Rotating courses of Abx (norfloxacin/metronidazole) were administered for 3 mos
- The glucose hydrogen methane breath test was performed at the 3 mo f/u
- The prevalence of SIBO was 43.1%
- Risk factors for SIBO included diarrhea and constipation
- There was a correlation between GSS ≥ 5 and SIBO
- Eradication of SIBO was achieved in 52.4% of SSc patients
