Rheumatology, 08/24/09
Knafo R et al. – Data show that women with systemic sclerosis (SSc), particularly those with dcSSc, have high levels of sexual impairment compared with women with other chronic diseases, where sexual function has received greater attention.
Methods- A comparison of the levels of sexual impairment in women with SSc vs women with other medical illnesses for which sexual impairment has been researched more extensively
- SSc pts completed the Sexual Relationships subscale of the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self-Report (PAIS-SR)
- A systematic review was conducted to select comparison samples
- Sexual Relationships subscale scores from SSc pts were compared with scores from comparison samples (breast or gynaecological cancer and HIV)
- Samples from 138 female SSc pts were analysed
- Women with dcSSc reported greater sexual impairment than those with lcSSc, 3 breast cancer samples, and 2 samples of HIV-positive female pts
- Scores in dcSSc were similar to 1 sample of HIV-positive women and gynaecological cancer pts
- Scores in lcSSc were higher than 2 breast cancer samples, similar to 1 breast cancer sample and 2 HIV-positive samples, and lower than in 1 HIV sample and gynaecological cancer
