Sanmarco M et al. – Review describes the characteristics of antibody against phosphatidylethanolamine1 (aPE), a zwitterionic phospholipids, and the recent evidence that aPE are correlated with the main clinical features of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), notably, in the absence of the laboratory criteria of this syndrome.

The isolated presence of aPE in clinical APS may be used as laboratory markers of ‘seronegative APS’, which refers to patients persistently negative for these antibodies despite a clinical picture that is highly suggestive of this syndrome. Nevertheless, future studies are required to standardise aPE assays to support the clinical relevance of these antibodies.
