Hyperuricemia and incident heart failure
Circulation: Heart Failure, 08/11/09
Krishnan E et al. – Hyperuricemia is a novel, independent, risk factor for heart failure (HF) in a group of young general community dwellers. This finding has implications for development of preventive strategies for HF.
Methods- Prospective analysis of the relationship between serum uric acid concentration at baseline and subsequent HF
- Subjects from Framingham Offspring cohort: mean baseline age 36 yrs, women 52%
- Cox regressions for risk of HF with increasing serum uric acid after adjusting for sex, age, smoking, body mass index, renal dysfunction, diuretics, systolic blood pressure, valvular heart disease, diabetes, alcohol, and use of anti–hypertensive drugs
- HF incidence rates ~6 fold higher among pts at highest quartile of serum uric acid (>6.3 mg/dlL vs at lowest quartile (<3.4 mg/dL)
- Adjusted hazard ratio for highest quartile of serum uric acid vs lowest: 2.1 (1.04–4.22)
- Relationship between hyperuricemia and heart failure in pts without metabolic syndrome and other subgroups
