Exercise interventions in fibromyalgia: Clinical applications from the evidence

Jones KD et al. – Article summarizes physiologic obstacles to exercise and reviews exercise interventions in fibromyalgia (FM). In addition, the top 10 principles for successfully prescribing exercise in the comprehensive treatment of FM are also described. The following approach is recommended to incorporate exercise into a comprehensive treatment strategy of FM:
- Confirm the diagnosis of FM on the first visit
- Take a focused medical history, with particular emphasis on pain, sleep, fatigue, stiffness, mood disorders, and cognition
- Use of a body pain diagram can help to identify peripheral painGenerators
- Begin medications depending on which symptoms are most severe or distressing
- As symptoms begin to improve, provide education about FM and exercise techniques, mostly through books and Web resources
- During the next few visits, optimize medical management and refer pts forfurther treatment as needed
