Arthroscopic subtalar fusion for post-traumatic subtalar arthritis
Arthroscopy, 08/19/09
Shazly OE et al. - Study reports that arthroscopically assisted posterior facet fusion of the subtalar joint is an effective method for management of subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture.
Methods- Aim was to determine the results of arthroscopic subtalar posterior facet fusion for subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture
- 10 pts (8 men); all were treated conservatively, but pain was not controlled
- Only pts without hardware in the calcaneus were chosen to participate in the study
- Pts were treated by posterior subtalar arthroscopic fusion
- Fixation was done by percutaneous cannulated screws; bone graft was not needed
- Evaluation preoperatively and postoperatively was by the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scoring system for the ankle and hind foot
- Mean f/u period was 28.4 mo; only 1 case was missed during f/u
- There was significant improvement in total score after 2 yrs' f/u
- There was improvement in pain and walking distance after f/u
- Mean time for fusion was 11.44 wks
- Only 1 case had painful neuroma at the site of the anterolateral portal
