Arthroscopic subtalar fusion for post-traumatic subtalar arthritis

Shazly OE et al. - Study reports that arthroscopically assisted posterior facet fusion of the subtalar joint is an effective method for management of subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture.

• Aim was to determine the results of arthroscopic subtalar posterior facet fusion for subtalar arthritis after calcaneal fracture
• 10 pts (8 men); all were treated conservatively, but pain was not controlled
• Only pts without hardware in the calcaneus were chosen to participate in the study
• Pts were treated by posterior subtalar arthroscopic fusion
• Fixation was done by percutaneous cannulated screws; bone graft was not needed
• Evaluation preoperatively and postoperatively was by the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society scoring system for the ankle and hind foot
• Mean f/u period was 28.4 mo; only 1 case was missed during f/u

• There was significant improvement in total score after 2 yrs' f/u
• There was improvement in pain and walking distance after f/u
• Mean time for fusion was 11.44 wks
• Only 1 case had painful neuroma at the site of the anterolateral portal
