Leblebici B et al. – Study demonstrates that in the elderly, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a very common problem, which mostly accompanies degenerative joint diseases and give rise to exagerated painful conditions
Methods- Main objectives of this study were to:
- Investigate the frequency and the associated features of FMS which plays a significant role in the chronic pain syndromes, and
- Compare the pain variables in solitary osteoarthritic (OA) pts vs OA plus FMS pts
- in a group of elderly pts
- 124 pts, >65 yrs, who were consecutively admitted to the Physical Medica and Rehabilitation outpatient clinics
- 65 pts who had no painful diseases other than OA and/or FMS were investigated by:
- Clinical and radiological features and
- Essential laboratory tests
- Diagnosis of FMS was made according to the criteria of ACR
- All FMS pts were also evaluated by Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire
- Pain parameters included:
- Visual analog scale (VAS)
- Number of degenerative joints
- Antiinflammatory and analgesic drug intake, and
- Number of tender points (NTP)
- 124 pts (97 female, 27 male); mean age: 70.56±5.05 yrs; mean age of menopause: 46.04±7.08 yrs
- 47/124 (37.9%) were having FMS
- 42 of these FMS pts also had OA
- 23 pts had only OA
- Higher values in VAS scores and incidence of psychiatric problems in OA+FMS patient group vs OA patient group was noted
