The effect of mud pack treatment in knee osteoarthritis
Rheumatism, 08/03/09
Odabasi E et al. – Study demonstrates that the mud pack treatment significantly improves the pain and functional status of patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods- An evaluation of the efficacy of mud pack treatment in pts with knee OA
- 57 pts with bilateral primary OA, divided into 2 groups based on their availability for mud application during the study period:
- Study group (32 pts): subjected to daily mud pack treatment on weekdays only for 3 wks, applied to both knees for 30 min at 45°C (total 15 applications)
- Control group (25 pts): had analgesic treatment with acetaminophen 2 g/d
- All pts were evaluated 3 times:
- At the baseline
- Immediately after the 15th application, and
- 30 days after the end of the treatment
- Primary outcome: WOMAC, pain intensity (VAS) and pt's and physician's assessment of disease severity index
- As compared to the baseline, significant decreases were observed in both groups in terms of WOMAC, pain intensity, and disease severity index scores
- Improvements were found to be superior in the study group vs controls
- Moreover, a significant number of pts in the study group had minimal clinically important improvement vs control group
