Subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in young South-Asian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
Clinical Rheumatology, 07/29/09
Ghosh P et al. – Indian patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have higher prevalence of subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction. Presence of damage was associated with abnormal intima-medial thickness (IMT) in SLE patients.
Methods- Study was conducted to find out the prevalence and predictors of carotid IMT and brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) in SLE pts from India
- Endothelial dysfunction was assessed by FMD in brachial artery
- IMT was measured in common carotid artery in SLE pts and healthy controls
- 60 SLE pts (mean age 31±9 yrs) and 38 healthy controls (mean age 34±6 years)
- IMT was higher in SLE pts vs controls
- SLE and damage were independent predictors of abnormal IMT
- FMD was impaired in SLE pts vs controls
- None of the classical cardiovascular risk factors were predictors of FMD or abnormal IMT
