Iron homoeostasis in rheumatic disease
Rheumatology, 07/27/09
Baker JF et al. – Article reviews associations between iron homoeostasis and the immune system and the potential role of iron in autoimmune rheumatic diseases and gout. Study concludes that altered iron homoeostasis may represent a purposeful response to inflammation that could have theoretical anti-inflammatory benefits. Physicians are advised to avoid routine iron supplementation in those without depleted iron stores. Key messages of this article are:
- Iron is important in normal immune function and deficiency can result in mild immunosuppression
- Iron homeostasis is altered in rheumatic diseases, with decreased metal availability as a purposeful response to inflammation
- supplementation of iron could potentially have a negative impact on disease activity in these conditions
