Assessment of disease activity and quality of life in systemic lupus erythematosus? New aspects
Best Practice & Research: Clinical Rheumatology, 07/27/09
Yee CS et al. – Article describes the recent updates and changes in the standardised assessment of disease activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Discussion goes like this:
- Outcomes in SLE can be described in three domains: disease activity, accumulated damage, and HRQoL
- Gastrointestinal and ophthalmic manifestations are reported to be associated with significant morbidity and mortality
- Furthermore, it has been realised that there is a deficiency in using generic scales (SF-36) to assess HRQoL in SLE pts, as they fail to identify issues that are important to pts
- As a result, SLE-specific measures of HRQoL have been developed recently
