Effect of balneotherapy on temporospatial gait characteristics of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

Kilikoglu O et al. – Study concludes that a 2-week spa treatment with twice daily baths (balneotherapy) has positive effects on gait characteristics of patients with mild or moderate knee osteoarthritis (OA).

• Prospective study aims to investigate the effects of a 2-wk spa treatment with twice daily baths on gait characteristics of pts with mild or moderate knee OA
• Study uses gait analysis, a quantitative and objective assessment method as the primary outcome parameter
• Other subjective and semi-objective clinical outcome parameters were also used
• 30 pts; evaluated using gait analysis and clinical scores, both within 2 wks, before and after spa treatment

• Pts were walking faster in their control analyses with a shorter mean stance time, an increased cadence and stride length
• Balneotherapy also resulted in a significant decrease in Lequesne knee osteoarthritis index, VAS for pain, VAS for pts’ and investigator’s global assessment and WOMAC score
