Electrocardiographic evaluation in patients with systemic scleroderma and without clinically evident heart disease

Bielous-Wilk A et al. – Noninvasive electrocardiographic may detect early heart involvement in course of systemic scleroderma (SSc) and may be recommended for routine used in clinical practice. Significance of heart rate turbulence (HRT) analysis in SSc pts is pending further study.

• Study of electrocardiographic changes, parameters of heart rate variability (HRV), and HRT in SSc pts without evident heart disease symptoms
• Standard electrocardiography (ECG) examination and 24-hr Holter monitoring for 27 SSc pts
• Analysis of HRV in time and frequency domains, HRT, and echocardiography

• On Holter monitoring, larger number of premature supraventricular contractions (PSVCs) and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) for SSc pts vs controls
• Decreased parameters of time and frequency domains for SSc pts vs controls, especially during nighttime
• Abnormal HRT values in 4 pts
• Only slight changes on echocardiography
• Left ventricle diastolic dysfunction diagnosed in 5 pts
