Homocysteine levels in patients with Behçets disease and patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis
Clinical Rheumatology, 07/10/09
Gonul M et al. – Study reports that no differences in homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels could be found between Behçet disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients and controls; possibly due to the fact that the patients included in this study mostly had cutaneous symptoms rather than vascular involvement.
Methods- A comparison of the levels of homocysteine, vitamin B12, and folic acid of BD pts vs those with RAS pts and healthy controls
- 45 BD pts, 47 RAS pts, and 69 healty control subjects
- Vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine levels of pts and controls were measured and differences determined
- BD pts had mostly cutaneous symptoms
- Arthritis and ocular and vascular involvement were seen in 24.4%, 22%, and 11% of BD pts, respectively
- No difference was detected among the groups in the levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine
- No difference in any parameters according to sex and age of the pts and activity of BD and if the pts with BD were treated or not
- Homocysteine level inversely correlated with vitamin B12 and folic acid levels in the BD group
