Wright AA et al. - Overall, few variables were found to be strongly associated with the progression of hip OA, and a variety of other variables were weakly predictive of outcome.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Alexis A. Wright, 07/12/09

This article highlights the need for further research in the area of hip osteoarthritis. Very little research focuses on the area of hip osteoarthritis alone and often combines it with knee osteoarthritis. Further, the need for more long term studies > 1 year is needed as hip osteoarthritis is considered a somewhat chronic condition whereby symptoms take longer to progress. Finally, the need for research to focus on variables predictive of success with treatments other than surgery and pharmacology is needed as more conservative treatment options such as physical therapy have been suggested.
