Incidence of postthrombotic syndrome in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty for osteoarthritis
Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, 06/25/09
McAndrew CM et al. - Study reports that postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) does not seem to be a major sequela of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods- Aim was to determine the incidence of PTS after DVT diagnosed on screening ultrasound in pts undergoing primary TKA for OA
- Records of 1406 pts who underwent primary TKA for OA were compared with the incidence of PTS in pts w/o and with DVT
- All pts had postoperative screening ultrasound
- From these 1406 pts, 66 (4.7%) had DVT, 50 of whom had a minimum of 1 yr f/u (mean, 4.97 yrs)
- PTS was diagnosed if any two of six signs were documented in the medical record
- 3 of 50 pts with DVT (6%) had signs consistent with PTS
- 2 of these 3 had a DVT proximal to the soleal arch
- 7 of 88 (8%) pts randomly chosen for primary TKA because of OA with similar mean age and gender, but w/o DVT, had signs of PTS
