Mukhtyar C et al. – A review summarizes data available for the effect of primary systemic vasculitis on cardiovascular endpoints (coronary artery disease, congestive cardiac failure, hypertension, aortic aneurysm) in all age groups. A discussion is presented of the interplay between activated endothelium, autoimmune mechanisms and treatment factors to produce a direct insult or increased atherogenic potential of primary systemic vasculitis. Recommendations for cardiovascular endpoints are offered.
