Effect of musculoskeletal pain on sexuality of male adolescents and adults with juvenile idiopathic arthritis
Journal of Rheumatology, 06/11/09
Souza L et al. – Study demonstrates that the Male Sexual Evaluation Questionnaire (MSEQ) was applicable to this cohort of male patients with RF-negative polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and showed that sexual life is preserved despite longterm disease, morbidity/functional dysfunction, and joint pain.
Methods- Aim was to develop a questionnaire for the evaluation of sexuality of male pts with JIA
- HAQ was applied to all pts
- 120 age-matched males of the same socioeconomic status served as controls
- A self-administered structured instrument, the MSEQ, was developed to assess sexual life, including satisfaction, practice, and related functional aspects
- 32 male pts with RF-negative polyarticular
- Mean HAQ score was 1.25 ± 0.67 (range 0.1-2.1)
- Masturbation was practiced similarly by pts and controls, although joint pain was observed in only 2 (7%) pts
- Regular sexual intercourse (≥once/wk) was reported by 78% of pts and 62% of controls
- Joint pain during intercourse was more frequent in pts
- Mean HAQ score was higher in the 12 pts with joint pain during intercourse vs 13 pts w/o joint pain
- Preserved desire and satisfaction were universal findings for all JIA pts and controls
