Wastowski IJ et al. – HLA-G is expressed in skin biopsies from patients with SSc, and this is associated with a better disease prognosis, suggesting a modulatory role of HLA-G in systemic sclerosis (SSc), as observed in other skin disorders.

The pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is complex and remains incompletely understood. Most current hypotheses of the pathogenesis of SSc focus on the interplay between early immunological events and vascular changes. We proposed to evaluate the HLA-G expression in SSc because this disease presents pathogenic characteristics that could be induced HLA-G expression like the stress condition of hypoxia and cytokines profile; moreover, accumulating evidence demonstrates HLA-G expression in chronic inflammatory cutaneous diseases. Our results suggest that HLAG expression in SSc patients could be associated with a more favorable disease course. Although the beneficial role of HLA-G has been demonstrated in some auto-immune diseases, no previous study had been conducted on the evaluation of HLA-G expression in SSc. We hope to continue this study to better understand the HLA-G participation in SSc pathogênesis.
