Martens M et al. – Study reports that anakinra is a relatively safe and modestly efficacious biologic therapy for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). More studies are needed to evaluate safety and efficacy, and adverse event data for its longterm use.
Methods- A systematic review of clinical effectiveness and safety of anakinra in RA
- Literature search in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and the reference lists of included articles
- 5 trials; 2846 pts: 781 randomized to placebo and 2065 to anakinra
- An improvement in the number of participants achieving ACR20 treated with anakinra 50–150 mg/d vs placebo after 24 wks
- ACR50 ACR70, HAQ, VAS for pain, Larsen radiographic scores, and ESR demonstrated improvement with anakinra as well
- No differences noted in the number of withdrawals, deaths, adverse events and infections
- An increase in incidence of serious infections in anakinra vs placebo group was noted
- Injection site reactions were increased, occurring in 71% of anakinra vs 28% of placebo group
