Reduced number of endothelial progenitor cells is predictive of early relapse in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis
Rheumatology, 06/11/09
Závada J et al. – Study reports that the low numbers of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are associated with increased propensity for early relapse of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV).
Methods- An investigation of whether decreased capacity for endothelial regeneration paralleled by low EPC numbers could increase the risk of relapse in pts with AAV
- 41 pts; number of circulating EPCs was determined by a colony-forming assay
- Pts were stratified into 3 subgroups according to the initial EPC count and prospectively followed
- Primary goal was to determine:
- Association between baseline EPC level and
- Time to the first relapse of the disease
- 46% pts relapsed during the study period
- Cumulative relapse-free survival increased stepwise across 3 increasing baseline levels of EPCs
- EPC levels were not predictive of:
- Progression of renal disease
- Number of organs involved or
- Death from any cause
