Bone mineral density in patients with familial Mediterranean fever
Rheumatology International, 05/22/09
Yildirim K et al. – Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal-recessive disease characterized by recurrent episodes of peritonitis, pleuritis, and arthritis, which are usually associated with fever. Data presented in this study suggest that lumbar spine and femoral neck and total femur bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with FMF may be lower than in healthy subjects.
Methods- Study to determine lumbar and femoral BMD in pts with FMF
- In pts with FMF and control subjects, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured
- BMD was determined at the lumbar spine (L1–4) and the femoral regions (neck and total) using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry
- 28 FMF pts and 30 control subjects w/o a history of inflammatory disease
- Demographic variables, such as age, sex and BMI were similar between pts and controls
- A difference in ESR and CRP between FMF pts and controls were found
- A significant difference in lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total femur BMD between FMF pts and control groups was also noted
