Xanthine oxidase inhibiting effects of noni (Morinda citrifolia) fruit juice
Phytotherapy Research, 05/15/09
Palu A et al. - It was elucidated that the noni fruit juice inhibitory effect on XO enzymes is the mechanism by which noni ameliorates gout and gout-like diseases. Further, the results also support the traditional usage of noni in the treatment of gout.
Afa Palu, 05/14/09
It was known in Tonga and the rest of Polynesia that ingestion of noni fruit juices help ameliorate gout conditions for over 2000 years. However, what was not known was the mechanisms behind it. The purpose of our study was to elucidate the mechanisms of noni fruit juice anti-gout effects. Our results not only indicate the noni fruit juice inhibit Xanthine oxidase enzymes, concentration-dependently, which are known to be involved in gout diseases but alo verify the traditional usage of noni fruit juices by Polynesian traditional healers for treatment of gout. As such, clinical trial is warranted to assess the dosages in humans. |
