Correlation of biomarkers of endothelium dysfunction and matrix remodeling in patients with systemic sclerosis
Journal of Rheumatology, 05/18/09
Blaise S et al. – Data support the hypothesis of an association of endothelial dysfunction and matrix remodeling in scleroderma spectrum disorders (systemic sclerosis [SSc]).
Methods- Study of whether plasma asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) correlates with serum tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1)
- ADMA: a marker for endothelial dysfunction; TIMP-1: marker for matrix remodeling
- 91 subjects: 39 SSc pts, 28 primary Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP) pts, 24 healthy volunteers
- Measurement of plasma ADMA concentrations by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
- Measurement of serum TIMP-1 concentrations by ELISA
- Mean ADMA concentrations higher in SSc pts vs primary RP pts or healthy volunteers
- Median serum TIMP-1 concentrations increased in SSc pts vs primary RP pts and healthy volunteers
- In SSc group, significant correlation between plasma ADMA and serum TIMP-1
