High incidence of celiac disease in patients with systemic sclerosis

Rosato E et al. – Data provides evidence of an increased prevalence of celiac disease in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
Methods- An evaluation of the presence of celiac disease in pts with SSc
- Presence of anti-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) Abs and serum antiendomysial Abs (anti-EMA) in 50 pts with SSc were evaluated
- All subjects were on a gluten-containing diet
- Duodenal mucosa histology and biopsy culture were performed in anti-tTG-positive pts
- Anti-EMA and IgA, IgG1 anti-tTG were detected in culture supernatants
- Incidence of celiac disease in SSc pts was 8%
- Serum anti-tTG Ab-positive results were detectable in 5/50 pts with SSc, but only in 4 of them was the diagnosis confirmed by histological results
