Does smoking influence fibromyalgia syndrome patients health status?
Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain , 04/21/09
Costallat BL et al. – Study reports that smoking habits had no impact on the health status of FMS patients. The FMS was strongly related to depression, fatigue, and anxiety in FMS smokers and FMS nonsmokers.
Methods- Aim was to examine the influence of smoking on fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) patients' health status through:
- fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) and
- pts' perception of depression, fatigue, and anxiety
- Participants were female (n=108) with no race or age difference, divided into 3 groups:
- Group 1 (n=40) - FMS nonsmokers
- Group 2 (n=28) - FMS smokers
- Group 3 (n=40) - non-FMS smokers (controls)
- Data included smoking status, nicotine dependence, and the FIQ
- Questions concerning depression, fatigue, and anxiety were used to measure psychological and physical involvement in the control group
- FIQ scores were similar in FMS smokers and FMS non-smokers
- Group 1 and Group 2 had higher depression, fatigue, and anxiety scores than Group 3, respectively
- The FMS non-smokers and FMS smokers with low and moderate dependence had higher depression, fatigue, and anxiety scores vs non-FMS smokers
- No difference was observed among FMS smokers and non-FMS smokers with high nicotine dependence
