Increased risk of peripheral arterial disease in polymyalgia rheumatica: A population-based cohort study
Arthritis Research & Therapy, 04/06/09
Warrington KJ et al. - Study concludes that patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) appear to have an increased risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
Methods- Aim was to determine whether pts with PMR are at an increased risk of PAD
- Pts with PMR between 1/1/1970 and 12/31/1999, were compared to non-PMR subjects
- Both cohorts followed longitudinally by complete medical record review until death, incident PAD, migration, or 12/31/2006
- PMR-related disease characteristics, traditional CV risk factors and diagnosis of PAD were abstracted from the medical record
- 353 PMR pts, and 705 non-PMR subjects were followed for a median of 11.0 yrs
- PAD developed in 38 pts with PMR and in 28 non-PMR subjects
- After adjusting for traditional CV risk factors, pts with PMR still had a higher risk for PAD vs controls
- Giant cell arteritis occurred in 18% PMR pts but was not predictive of PAD
- No difference between mortality in PMR and the non-PMR cohorts nor in PMR pts with and those w/o PAD
