Executive function and decision-making in women with fibromyalgia
Archives of Clinical Neurospsychology, 04/02/09
Verdejo-García A et al. – Personality variables are very mildly associated with cognitive performance in FM women with fibromyalgia (FM).
Methods- Study of possible impairment of executive function and decision-making in 36 women diagnosed with FM and 36 healthy women matched in age, education, and socioeconomic status
- Comparison of performance of both groups on 2 measures of executive functioning: the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the Iowa Gambling Tasks (IGT)
- WCST to assess cognitive flexibility skills
- IGT (original and variant versions) to assess emotion-based decision-making
- Original IGT: immediate reward / delayed punishment
- Variant IGT: immediate punishment / delayed reward
- Evaluation of relationship between executive function performance and pain experience, and between executive function and personality traits of novelty-seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence (measured by Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised)
- Poorer performance on WCST for FM pts vs healthy comparison women on number of categories and non-perseverative errors, but not on perseverative errors
- Altered learning curve on original IGT for FM pts, suggesting compromised emotion-based decision-making, but not on variant IGT suggesting hypersensitivity to reward
