Incidence of cancer among patients with systemic sclerosis in Korea: Results from a single centre
Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology , 03/26/09
Kang KY et al. – The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of cancer was found to be significantly higher in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients, and especially in those who were male, than in the general population. Lung cancer was the most common cancer; active surveillance in these pts is recommended.
Methods- Study to determine whether the incidence of cancer has increased among SSc pts in Korea
- 112 pts evaluated for at least 6 mo
- Their medical records were reviewed
- Incidence rate of cancer was investigated and compared with that of the Korea National Cancer Centre database
- 9/112 pts developed cancer (4 males and 5 females)
- The average age at diagnosis of cancer was 56.4 yrs and mean disease duration was 8.9 yrs
- SIR for SSc pts was 4.2, 3.7 for women, and 6.4 for men
- Lung cancer was the most common cancer, followed by oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, and squamous cell carcinoma of unknown origin
- All pts who developed lung cancer were female and non-small cell carcinoma in origin
- The SIR of lung cancer in female pts was 23.0
- 2/4 lung cancer pts had concomitant interstitial lung disease (ILD); all were non-smokers
- Treatment agents, autoantibodies, smoking, and lung involvement were not different between SSc pts with or w/o cancer
