Journal of Rheumatology, 03/19/09
Neogi T et al – Data show that serum uric acid (SUA) was associated with carotid atherosclerotic plaques in men. Results were similar in the absence of CV risk factors.
Methods- Aim was to examine the association of SUA with a marker of preclinical CVD, carotid atherosclerotic plaques (PLQ)
- PLQ were assessed with carotid ultrasound
- Sex-specific logistic regression to assess the association of SUA with presence of PLQ
- 4866 participants; 54% women, mean age 52 yrs, mean BMI 27.6
- Association of SUA with PLQ increased with increasing SUA levels, demonstrating a dose-response relation for men
- Similar associations were found in men w/o CV risk factors
- No relation of SUA with PLQ in women was noted
