Intravenous micronutrient therapy (Myers cocktail) for fibromyalgia: A placebo-controlled pilot study
Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 03/06/09
Ali A et al. - Study establishes the safety and feasibility of treating fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) with intravenous micronutrient therapy (IVMT). Although most subjects experienced relief but no significant differences were seen between IVMT and placebo; its efficacy has yet to be determined.
Methods- Study to assess the feasibility, safety of IVMT for FMS and to provided insights into the efficacy of this therapy
- Subjects: 34 adults with ACR-defined FMS
- Pts randomly assigned either to treatment (weekly infusions of IVMT) or to placebo (weekly infusions of lactated Ringer's solution) for 8 wks
- Primary outcome: change in Tender Point Index, assessed 8 and 12 wks after initiation
- Secondary measures: VAS to assess global pain, and validated measures of physical function, mood, and QoL
- Clinically significant improvements were noted, however no significant differences were seen between groups, in any outcome measure
- Statistically significant within-group differences were seen in both the intervention and placebo groups
- At 8 wks, the IVMT group experienced improved tender points, pain, depression, and QoL directly following treatment
- Placebo group experienced improved tender points only
- The treatment effects of IVMT persisted at 4 wks postintervention for tender points, pain, and QoL
- Placebo effects persisted only for tender points
- A single minor AE was noted in one subject in the intervention group
