Patients with ankylosing spondylitis have increased sick leave-a registry-based-control study over 7 yrs

Strömbeck B et al. – Study reports that patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in rheumatology specialist care in South Sweden have an increased level of sick leave compared with controls.

Methods

Aim was to investigate sick leave over a 7-yr period in pts with AS vs population-based controls matched for age, sex and residential area
122 (21 women and 101 men) outpatients with AS in South Sweden; mean age was 43 yrs and mean disease duration was 20 yrs
Two controls per case, matched for age, sex and residential area

Results

More AS pts than controls were registered for sickness benefit and sickness compensation
Cases had an increased risk for sick leave vs controls, and cases had more days with sick leave than controls
