Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, 12/10/08
Elliot AJ et al. - Study shows that the incidence of gout is seasonal. This has implications for the management of patients who currently suffer gout, and for those patients who are at risk from future attacks.

- New cases and acute attacks of gout per 10,000 population were calculated for age groups 0-44, 45-64, 65-74 and ≥75 yrs
- Long-term trends assessed by regression analysis
- Seasonality indices calculated using 4-weekly data; relative risk during the summer estimated
- Annual prevalence estimated from the consulting and from prescribing data
- Annual incidence rate of new gout cases was stable from 1998-2007; acute attacks decreased on average 4%/yr
- New gout cases and acute attacks during the ‘summer’ period
