High frequency of venous thromboembolic events in Churg-Strauss syndrome, Wegener's granulomatosis and microscopic polyangiitis but not polyarteritis nodosa: A systematic retrospective study on 1130 patients
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, 11/24/08
Allenbach Y et al. - These results suggest that, like Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), Churg–Strauss syndrome (CSS) patients are at greater risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTE), than those with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN).
Methods- Study to determine the frequency and risk factors of VTE in WG, MPA, CSS, and PAN
- Retrospective, systematic analysis and comparison between VTE and non-VTE pts’ characteristics among the 1130 WG, MPA, CSS or PAN pts
- During a mean f/u of 58.4 ± 45.8 mo, VTE occurred in 6.5% pts, with a median vasculitis–VTE-diagnosis interval of 5.8 mo
- VTE occurred in 2.5% PAN, 8.2% CSS, 8% WG, and 7.6% MPA pts
- Age, male sex or prior VTE or stroke with motor deficit were associated with a higher VTE risk
- Adjusted odds ratio for VTE was 2.88 for WG, MPA and CSS pts vs PAN
