Serum uric acid is associated with carotid plaques: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Family Heart Study
Journal of Rheumatology, 11/19/08
Neogi T et al. – In this large study, serum uric acid (SUA) was associated with carotid atherosclerotic plaques in men, even in the absence of CV risk factors, suggesting that SUA may have a pathophysiologic role in atherosclerosis in men.
Methods- Study to examine the association of SUA with a marker of preclinical CVD, carotid atherosclerotic plaques (PLQ), focusing on individuals w/o CV risk factors
- NHLBI Family Heart Study; PLQ were assessed with carotid ultrasound
- Sex-specific logistic regression
- 4866 participants had both SUA and carotid ultrasound assessed (54% women, mean age 52 yrs, mean BMI 27.6)
- Association of SUA with PLQ increased with increasing SUA levels, demonstrating a dose-response relation for men
- Similar associations found in men w/o CV risk factors
- No relation of SUA with PLQ in women
